Science for evidence-based and sustainable decisions about natural capital

EUROPEAN COMMISSION – HORIZON EUROPE (2022 – 2027)

Aims to provide guidance for evidence-based decision making that supports the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of our environment. By collaborating with experts from 50 organisation, SELINA will set standards for international cooperation to promote Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity conservation and enhance Ecosystem Conditions.

PLANES leads WP8 “Supporting evidence-based public decision-making”, which will develop real-world examples of how ecosystem services knowledge can support public decision-making processes in various sectors.

Bio Knowledge Agora: developing the science service for european research and biodiversity policymaking

EUROPEAN COMMISSION – HORIZON EUROPE (2022 – 2027)

Aims to develop a Science Service, which ensure that all decision makers across all societal sectors have direct access to research-based knowledge when planning, budgeting and deciding on actions that have an impact on local, national, EU and global biodiversity. Bioagora will responds to the present gaps and future needs in science policy interfaces and provides the science pillar of the EU’s Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD). It will channel the entire landscape of EU biodiversity science from monitoring to meta-analyses and communicate this knowledge through two-way platforms to EU institutions and the broader community.

Biodiversity value in spatial policy and planning leveraging multi-level and transformative change

EUROPEAN COMMISSION – HORIZON EUROPE (2022 – 2025)

The objective is to safeguard and increase biodiversity by better arcticulating three instrumental perspectives – spatial planning, environmental assessment, and economic and financing instruments -, individually and in combined action. BioValue builds upon knowledge created by several EU projects, including a conceptual framework on transformative change to be adapted for analysing the potential of instruments and their interactions in local case-studies.

PLANES leads WP1, which aims to understand and explore how spatial planning and management instrument can proactively ensure biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning, and which are the urban-rural scale levers in the EU spatial planning system that can enable transformative change.

Soils for Europe

EUROPEAN COMMISSION – HORIZON EUROPE (2022 – 2027)

SOLO aims to identify current knowledge gaps, drivers, bottlenecks and novel research and innovation approaches to be considered in the European Soil Mission research and innovation roadmap. The project aims to create knowledge hub for soil health research and innovation that will last beyond the project’s lifespan by establishing strategic partnerships and by implementing a participatory and transparent process.

PLANES will lead the tasks related to No net soil sealing and increase the reuse of urban soils.

Nature-based solutions for pandemic and climate-resilient cities

University of trento – covid 19 research grant (2021-2022)

Through an interdisciplinary approach, this research explores the role of Nature-based Solution in cities and their planning and governance to design future-proof cities and ensure the well-being of citizens in the time of climate change, demographic growth and pandemic crisis.

From Case Studies to Anchor Projects –Setting the ground to advance MAES in Europe´s overseas

European Commission – DG Environment Action (2020-2022)

Aims at establishing and strengthen a scientific and technical Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem and their Services (MAES) community in the European Overseas (French Guiana, Macaronesia, Reunión Island and South Atlantic), in order to produce good practice guidance and policy recommendations based on the specificities and needs of those regions.

PLANES leads the task related to knowledge sharing and capacity building for ecosystem condition and ecosystem services methods as part of the activity of Method development and Implementation Support.

Promoting research excellence in nature-based solutions for innovation, sustainable economic growth and human well-being in Malta

European Commission – Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action (2018-2021)

Aims to implement a strategy and research cluster to step-up and stimulate scientific excellence and innovation capacity in the area of nature-based solutions. ReNature will develop solutions to tackle environmental challenges through the design of cities that support communities, promote public health, cultural identity and social cohesion.

PLANES is engaged in all project activities, and lead the Work Package on capacity building to promote research excellence.

Facilitating MAES to support regional policy in Overseas Europe: mobilizing stakeholders and pooling resources

European Commission – DG Environment Action (2018-2021)

The goal of this action is to implement the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020 in the Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories of the EU. This involves the Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES Initiative) and the establishment of a collaborative network of local agents and mainland Europe teams.

PLANES is involved in knowledge sharing through information repository and in outlining a MAES Strategic Plan for the EU Overseas.

Smart information, governance and business innovations for sustainable supply and payment mechanisms for forest ecosystem services

European Commission – Horizon 2020 Innovation Action (2017-2020)

Formulates, assesses, tests, and demonstrates policy and business innovations for the sustainable supply and financing of forest ecosystem services, building on the experiences and networking of six case study regions across Europe where successful ecosystem service governance innovations are initiated.

PLANES leads the Mapping and Assessment of forest ecosystem services at European scale, and contributes to a case study on mountain forest management in the Dolomites.

Enhancing ecoSysteM sERvices mApping for poLicy and Decision mAking

European Commission – Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action (2015-2018)

Aims to deliver a flexible methodology for pan-European and regional assessments. This project will identify relevant stakeholders and take stock of their requirements at EU, national and regional levels. The mapping approach proposed will integrate biophysical, social and economic assessment techniques.

PLANES is responsible for WP5 “Testing the final methods in policy- and decision-making”, which identifies case studies and demonstrates how the proposed methods may be used to inform policy and decision-making processes.

CLIMAWARE
CLIMatic change impacts on future Availability of WAter REsources and hydro-geological risk

University of Trento – Internal Research Grant (2015-2016)

Is an interdisciplinary research project. It aims to promote changes in production and consumption patterns, as well as in individual behaviours that climate change mitigation and adaptation require. This project studies the complex interplay between physical and human processes in controlling the distribution, in space and time, of water resources by considering both actual and possible future climatic and societal scenarios.

PLANES’ Davide Geneletti is team leader of task 5, which develops a holistic assessment of key vulnerabilities and compare different scenarios to support decision-making.
